Packing for Scotland in October Starts With Layers

Think in three pieces: a base layer, a warm middle, and a waterproof shell. Add or remove one as the day changes.

Choose pieces you can add or remove

Pack a couple of breathable tops, a fleece or wool sweater, and comfortable pants you’ll happily wear all day. The Met Office’s Scotland climate averages put October daytime highs around 13°C (55°F), with nights around 6°C (43°F). That sweater will earn its space!

Make rain protection practical, not optional

Bring a hooded waterproof jacket with taped seams. A shower-resistant fashion jacket may struggle when rain sticks around. For longer walks in the Highlands or islands, add waterproof trousers. Mountaineering Scotland’s hillwalking kit advice recommends both a waterproof jacket and overtrousers.

Pack Shoes and Small Essentials for Wet, Dark Days

Wet paths call for smarter footwear and a few little helpers.

Two hiking boots and rain gear rest on a wet trail with hills beyond.

Bring broken-in, grippy waterproof footwear

Choose waterproof walking boots with grippy soles for trails. Wet leaves and rocky paths get slippery, so wear your boots before the trip. For Edinburgh or Glasgow days, comfortable closed-toe shoes work well. Brand-new boots? Leave those at home.

Add warmth, visibility, and a way to stay dry

Tuck a warm hat and gloves into your day bag. A compact dry bag protects your phone and other electronics when rain catches you out. Add a head torch if a walk might run into evening. October daylight shrinks fast, and finding your way back in the dark isn’t much fun.

Adjust Your Scotland October Packing List by Region

The trick to packing for Scotland in October is matching your bag to your route.

Pack lighter for city breaks, warmer for the Highlands

Edinburgh and Glasgow often feel milder than exposed Highland areas. For museums, cafes, and short city walks, you can leave the heavy hiking extras behind. Heading into the mountains? Bring another warm layer, waterproof trousers, and proper boots. Check the mountain forecast too; higher ground can be much colder.

Check the forecast and plan around shorter daylight

Check local forecasts shortly before departure and again before long walks. The west is generally wetter than the east: in October 2025, the Met Office recorded 204.2 mm of rain in western Scotland, compared with 114.5 mm in the east. Around Inverness, daylight falls from roughly 11 hours 30 minutes to 9 hours 10 minutes across October. Start longer walks early.

Leave Room for the Weather

Your bag doesn’t need to predict every shower. Build outfits in layers, keep rain protection close, and choose extras for the places you’re visiting.

Then leave a little room in your plans for Scotland to change its mind about the weather.
