Stanton, Cotswolds

Ever wondered where Londoners escape when they need a breath of fresh countryside air? Just a couple of hours from the bustling capital lies the Cotswolds, a rolling landscape of honey-colored villages that seem plucked straight from a storybook.

I’ve made this journey countless times, and let me tell you…there’s something magical about trading the city’s concrete jungle for these peaceful hills, even if just for a day. Whether you’re a visitor to London looking to experience quintessential English countryside or a local seeking a perfect weekend escape, these charming villages are calling your name.

Burford: A Charming First Stop

There’s something magical about starting your Cotswolds adventure in Burford, often called the “Gateway to the Cotswolds.” It’s perfectly positioned for that first taste of countryside charm when you’re heading out from London. I love wandering down the sloping High Street with its honey-colored stone cottages that seem to tell stories from centuries past.

You’ll find plenty of boutique shops to browse, cozy cafes for a morning coffee, and traditional pubs if you’re ready for an early lunch. Don’t miss taking a stroll around the old church and ducking down the quaint side streets, that’s where you’ll really feel the classic Cotswold character come to life.

Need somewhere to park? Head to the car park near the bottom of High Street. And when hunger strikes, the local cafes serve up delicious treats made with local produce. Just the fuel you need for the day ahead!

Bourton-on-the-Water: The Venice of the Cotswolds

Speaking of charming spots, Bourton-on-the-Water will steal your heart with its lovely low stone bridges spanning the River Windrush. It’s not called the “Venice of the Cotswolds” for nothing! The riverside setting creates such a peaceful atmosphere – well, at least in the quieter hours.

While you’re here, pop into the Cotswold Motoring Museum if you’re into vintage cars, or visit Birdland if feathered friends are more your thing. My personal favorite is the Model Village, it’s literally Bourton in miniature, and yes, there’s even a tiny model of the Model Village inside!

Here’s a tip I’ve learned the hard way: this village gets incredibly busy, especially during summer weekends. Try to arrive early (before 10 am if possible) to find parking and enjoy those picture-perfect river views before the crowds arrive.

Lower & Upper Slaughter: Twin Villages of Tranquility

Ready for some peace and quiet? The twin villages of Lower and Upper Slaughter offer just that. Don’t let the somewhat alarming names fool you…”slaughter” comes from the old English word for “muddy place,” and these villages are anything but grim!

One of my favorite walks in the entire Cotswolds is the gentle riverside path connecting these two villages. It’s only about a mile long, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. You’ll cross old stone bridges, pass ancient mills, and have countless opportunities to snap photos of the idyllic countryside.

The walk is suitable for most visitors, and you can take it at whatever pace suits you. Just be sure to look up from your camera occasionally to soak in the tranquil atmosphere that makes these villages so special.

Bibury: Postcard-Perfect Photos

If you’ve ever seen a postcard from the Cotswolds, chances are it featured Arlington Row in Bibury. This row of ancient weavers’ cottages is widely regarded as one of England’s most photographed spots, and when you see it, you’ll understand why.

Take your time walking along the River Coln and through the village. The scenery feels almost frozen in time, with the kind of rural English charm that’s getting harder to find these days.

Want my photographer’s tip? Visit in the late afternoon when the light gets softer and most of the tour buses have departed. You’ll have better lighting for those perfect shots and more space to enjoy the peaceful setting.

Broadway: Art and Panoramic Vistas

Broadway welcomes you with its wonderfully wide main street (hence the name) lined with independent art galleries, charming cafes, and antique shops. The atmosphere here strikes that perfect balance between vibrant and relaxed.

If you’re up for a bit of a hike, head to Broadway Tower. This iconic folly sits atop a hill and rewards your efforts with stunning panoramic views across the Cotswolds. On a clear day, you can see up to 16 counties!

Don’t have a car? No problem! Broadway is accessible by bus from Stratford-upon-Avon, which has direct train connections from London Marylebone. It’s a great option if you prefer to let someone else do the driving.
